What is a DD?

DD Mongoose is an original character created by me, sjokomila (aka Felix) But that can't be all there is to know about DD, right? If you've found yourself on this page, chances are you might be interested in learning more about the history of DD. Worry not! This page will explain all you need to know about him and his conception as a character.

The Mindy comic

To properly introduce DD we first need to talk about another one of my characters, Mindy!

Mindy was first shared in the Psychonauts fanatics discord server, in the #oc-art chat on the 20th of august, 2022. Her first official referense sheet would be finished and shared only a day later.


Mindy's first ref
Mindy started off as a Psychonauts self-insert. After I started rotating her more, she quickly developed her own story and identity outside of her original idea. I decided that I wanted to explore her backstory more by making a short comic about it. The first page was posted on the 17th of september, 2022. This comic got a bit out of hand but after exactly 100 pages I managed to finish the whole thing. The entire comic is available for reading on tumblr though I am planning on making a custom website to host it alongside my other comic in the near future.
During the creation of this comic, most things were planned out from the start. However, near the very beginning I started to develope more in-depth ideas for Mindy's backstory. This is where DD comes into play.

DD's Psychonauts origins

First ever DD sighting
On the 26th of september, 2022. I shared this work-in-progress picture of a new oc I was working on. This oc would later be known as DD (pronounced deedee) Mongoose. Later that day I would post the finished drawing, including a little bit of DD's personality.

It's worth noting that in earlier versions of DD's story, his name was often shortened to Darwin D. Mongoose, instead of DD Mongoose. DD's design was not yet finalised as I would later go on to try out diferent color schemes on him, ultimatelly deciding on a mostly brown/red is scheme with green eyes to contrast.

This design of DD would later be classified as "classic DD". Classic DD would later appear in the Psychonauts fancomic, as Mindy's old classmate. Yes, DD started off as a sidecharacter in my Psychonauts self-insert oc's backstory. DD would go on to appear in many pages of the comic, having his own mini-arch.
After the comic concluded, I would continue to draw DD. He would slowly take the place of Mindy as my main oc within the Psychonauts fandom. Ironic, considering DD isn't even a psychic.

The gay awakening

After the comic ended, and I started to focus more on DD. Eddie suggested a ship between DD and their oc Jim.

This led to a whole avelanche of oc shipping. We started developing our ocs more together and eventually DD had a whole new story arc and a new design. This design is refered to as "Epilogue DD" Where he wears a bowtie, a green jacket and he's gained more weight.

The un-Psychonautsifying

As time went on, my Psychinauts hyperfixation slowly faded, though my interest in DD, and the Jim and DD ship didn't end. So eventually Jim and DD drifted away from Psychonauts and I created an original universe for them to live in. Now that DD was seperate from Psychonauts, and also from Mindy, who still sits firmly within her Psychonauts lore, DD needed a new backstory. His new backstory and universe (reluctantly called "the normal story") Is different form his original lore, however all the important key factors stay the same. If you're not sure whet DD you're looking at, look at his eyes. Psychonauts DD has solid green eyes, and Normal story DD has heterochromia.

Conclusion

At this very moment, There are many DD alternate universes (all of them gay with Jim, of course) and so much more lore and info. I didn't even mention Robin, or Ni Ni!
